Foundation Subjects

We have a topic-based approach to teaching the foundation subjects and our intent is to make links when possible across the different curriculum areas. Each year group uses the National Early Years Framework or the National Curriculum to carefully select objectives that go together to create a meaningful and purposeful programme of study for each half term. The topics that are created usually have a science, history or geography focus. Our literacy work in the morning (drama, writing and shared reading) is also carefully planned to make links to these topics. We endeavour to be as creative as possible and begin our topics with a ‘wow’ launch day, which creates an air of curiosity and eagerness to learn. Within the half term, we try to plan for trips out and we like to complete the work with a celebration. The children are given 5 or 6 key questions at the beginning of each half term which they then have to answer again at the end as a form of assessment. (See below for the topic questions for this half term.) We find that the impact of a creative and theme- based learning is to really engage the children, which gives them a deeper knowledge of the topic and ultimately having a positive impact on achievement.

For further information about each Year group, their topics and any photographs of events please go to the ‘Children’ section of our website and then ‘Class pages’.
