Literacy Activity- RIC Activity

RIC stands for retrieve, interpret and choice, all skills you need to have when reading and answering questions about what you have read or seen.

Get your child to answer these questions:

1. How is the girl feeling? How do you know?

2. What has the girl found?  What do you think she should do? Challenge: Why do you think that?

3. What adjectives would you use to describe both pictures?  Write them down.

4. Why do you think this is happening?

5. Where do you think the bubble is going to take her?

Handy hint: Your child can give you the answers by just telling you them.

Topic Activity- Art

Today you are going to be an artist!

I would like you to create a place where you think the girl will go to on her bubble.

Draw her destination! You can colour, paint or collage it.

Top tip: It can be anywhere you like!

Ideas:

Space

Zoo

Mountain

School

Today’s lesson is about addition by making 10.

Follow the video lesson.

1, Follow the video.

2. Activity click on the PDF document link below.

TOP TIP: Ten frames are something the children are used to working with. It is really easy to make one at home: you can draw a grid on a piece of paper and then you need 10 circles cut out, colour one side of your counters in and leave the other side white. You can then also draw a part, part, whole model and use your counters on this as well to help represent the numbers, especially in missing number problems.

Top tip: with your counters it is good to have 10 in one colour and 10 in another colour as it helps with the visualisation.

If you have a printer at home, you can print the worksheets. If you don’t have a printer then it is just as easy to use a piece of paper. Still use the worksheet for the visual representations to help solve the problems.

Literacy Activity

Let’s see if your prediction picture was where she went!

Step 1: Watch the video clip. Click on the link below:

https://www.literacyshed.com/bubbles.html

Step 2: Write down some adjectives to describe how the girl is feeling.

Step 3: Write down some verbs to describe how the girl moves from bubble to bubble.

Top Tip: You can do this as you watch the clip and then use the pictures below to help you.

Step 4: Write down some sentences to describe how the girl moves, remember to use the verbs you thought of earlier.

For example:

leapt

glided

Topic Activity- Geography

Today you will be an explorer! You will be practising and learning a few words in a foreign language. Grown-ups please don’t worry they give you the example of how to say it, if I can do it anyone can. I thought because you enjoyed travelling around the world so much you might like to learn a new language.

Handy Hint: There are only 10 useful things to learn.

Step 1: Choose the language you want to learn:

German

Italian

Spanish

See below

Step 2: Practise them with your grown-up.

Step 3: Say them to someone else a teddy, your pet a brother or sister.

Challenge: Teach them to someone else.

Literacy Activity

Hello Year 1,

Egbert says he loves going on adventures but he knows he has to stay at home at the moment to stay safe. I spoke to him on a zoom call the other day and he said the problem is he has read all the books in his house several times and he is really missing your stories! Do you think he would like it if we made him a story? Yes, me too!

So here goes…

Today we will make a plan for tomorrows story writing.

Step 1: Choose where she goes to. You can use your picture that you made on Monday if you want or somewhere totally different. Use your imagination it doesn’t have to be a real place!

Some ideas:

Space

Jungle safari

Football stadium

Enchanted castle

Step 2: Choose who she is going to meet. Draw a picture of them below and give them a name.

Top tip: They don’t have to match with the surroundings, they don’t need to be real. You could have a dinosaur at the football stadium, an alien in the swimming pool!

Step 3: Choose an activity that the two characters do.

Some ideas:

Go on a roller coaster ride

Go swimming

Ride in a hot air balloon

Ride on a dinosaur

Or anything you might fancy doing at the moment!

Watching a film at the cinema

Going swimming

Draw a picture of what they are doing and add words to it because it will help you tomorrow.

Where she goes to

Who she meets

What she does

Remember to keep your plan, as you will be using it to help you write your story.

Topic Activity Science

Today you will be an explorer. Somehow, I think you are going to have lots of fun! I did when I went on…drum roll please…SAFARI!

Handy Hint: You might need a piece of paper with you where you can make notes.

Step 1: Click on the link below

https://www.oldbasfordschool.co.uk/virtual-tours/

Step 2: Click on the Longleat safari park

Step 3: Watch the safari.

Step 4: You can decide what to do or you could do a few.

Ideas:

  • List the animals you meet along the way
  • Write down one fact about each animal you meet
  • Choose an animal and write down facts about that animal
  • Research about an animal of your choice- you may have a book at home or you could use the internet with your grown-up
  • Draw, paint or collage a picture of your favourite animal and write a sentence to say why it is your favourite.

What will you choose to do?

Literacy Activity- Story writing for Egbert

Step 1: Choose a story starter

Once upon a time

In a land far, far away

One glorious day/ One gloomy day

Or use your own!

Step 2: Write your first sentence using the story starter + introduce girl

Remember to think it, say it, write it, read it!

Challenge: use one of your adjectives from Monday to describe the girl

Mrs Kelly’s example:

In a land far, far away a girl called Sandy walked down the beach.

Mrs Kelly’s example with the challenge:

In a land far, far away a gloomy looking girl called Sandy plodded down the winding beach.

Step 3: Write a sentence about what she finds.

You could start with: Until she found…

Step 4: Write a sentence about what she does with it.

Mrs Kelly’s example:

She decided to have a go and she blew lots of sparkling bubbles into the sky.

Step 5: Write a sentence about what next: Onto the bubble to your place!

Remember to use your plan to help you.

Mrs Kelly’s example:

Then Sandy leapt onto the bubble which slowly took her to the magical jungle safari!

Step 6: Now write a sentence about who she meets.

Step 7: Then write a few sentences about what they do together.

Top tip: Remember to use your plan to help you.

Where she goes to

Who she meets

What she does

Mrs Kelly’s example:

Top tip: Remember this is only an example, we always like to give the children ideas and go one step at a time. Simple sentences without the adjectives are just as good. But if your children want a challenge then add descriptive words to make it more interesting.

The Magical Safari

In a land far, far away a gloomy looking girl called Sandy plodded down the winding beach. Until she found an interesting looking bottle, Sandy apprehensively picked it up and saw that it was a bottle of bubbles. She decided to have a go and she blew lots of sparkling bubbles into the sky. Then Sandy leapt onto the huge bubble which slowly took her to the magical jungle safari! Sandy couldn’t believe her eyes there were so many animals roaming around the jungle like, tall giraffes,…
