ACTIVITY 2- LITERACY:

This week our literacy will be based on the story ‘The Tin Forest’ by Helen Ward and Wayne Anderson. It is about a man who recycles rubbish to make his own forest. He has a dream and one day it comes true!

1.Watch this video of someone reading the story.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_j_XPFxy5js

If you have time you could watch this animated version of the story.

               https://vimeo.com/36088583

2.Look at the pictures below. One is of the forest made from recycled materials and the other is of the tin forest after plants have grown.

3.Split your paper in half and label one side ‘old forest’ and the other side ‘new forest’.

4.Write noun phrases about the 2 different pictures. Remember a noun phrase is an adjective and a noun.

                                       the majestic tiger

You can use some of these adjectives. Can you think of your own ideas?

   metallic               rusty             shiny                 recycled

   silver                    bronze          copper              golden

   colourful             beautiful       stripy               patterned

natural               manmade      camouflaged

5.CHALLENGE: Can you write more than one adjective in your noun phrase? Don’t forget a comma!

                           the tiny, camouflaged frog

ACTIVITY 3: D.T.

The old man in ‘The Tin Forest’ made his trees, plants, birds and animals out of recycled materials that he had found. Can you create any plants or creatures that you would find in a woodland habitat from recycled boxes, packets, tubes and cartons? Her are a few ideas.

Have fun!

CHALLENGE- DEEPER THINKING TASK

ACTIVITY 2- LITERACY:

This week our literacy will be based on the story ‘The Tin Forest’ by Helen Ward and Wayne Anderson. It is about a man who recycles rubbish to make his own forest. He has a dream and one day it comes true!

1. Watch this video again to remind you of the story. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_j_XPFxy5js

under            over              below                beneath

on top of            in the middle of                next to

opposite           inside         outside        high above

3. Look at both of the pictures of the tin forest.

2. Write sentences using the prepositions from the list.

The wind-up bird is hiding in the middle of the trees.

I can see cute baby toucans snuggling inside their nest.

ACTIVITY 2- LITERACY:

Do you remember last week when we wrote a diary entry for the Stickman? Today we are going to write a diary entry for the man in ‘The Tin Forest’.

Look at the image of the forest that the man saw one morning.

  1. Can you imagine how he felt when he saw that his dream had come? How do you think he felt when he saw the real animals living in his recycled forest? What did he think when he saw all of the colours instead of the grey tin?
  2. Start with    Dear Diary.
  3. Try to include noun phrases (adjective and a noun) from Monday’s lesson.
  4. Include prepositions from yesterday’s lesson.
  5. Include feelings and emotions (from last week).

Here is my idea. It might help you with your ideas.

Dear Diary,

You wouldn’t believe what has happenend today! After many nights of dreaming, my wishes have finally come true! Feeling astonished, I stepped into a bright new world. How did this miracle happen? When I looked closely, I could see many magnificent creatures in my man made forest. Under the canopy of the trees, a stripy metal tiger sat like a statue surveying the jungle. Opposite he jealously watched a real life tiger majestically prowling through the undergrowth. In the middle of the tree tops, noisy toucans squawked excitedly at each other while their cute babies perched in their nest. A slinky gecko slithered down the tree trunk because his robotic cousin was chasing him. Feeling content, I can now look lovingly at my new forest that is filled with all the things that everyone wanted.

ACTIVITY 3- ART:

Using the images of the tin forest, can you draw a picture of your own idea of a tin forest?

Split your page in half. On one side draw everything in black and greys. On the other side draw everything in bright colours.

Don’t forget to email your lovely work to us, we would be so happy to see it!
