Topic Activity

Northern Lights ‘Daemons’

Had we been in school as normal, we would have been reading the book ‘Northern Lights’ by Philip Pullman.

Northern Lights (The Golden Compass) is set in a parallel universe. It features the journey of Lyra Belacqua to the Arctic in search of her missing friend, Roger Parslow, and her imprisoned uncle, Lord Asriel, who has been conducting experiments with a mysterious substance known as "Dust". Everyone has a 'daemon' which is the animal representation of their inner self and is always by their side. As a child, their daemons can change form. However as an adult they stay fixed.

I would like you to create your own daemon. You can make an animal up or choose a real life animal. Take /find a picture, draw or paint your daemon and explain why you have chosen that creature. What does it tell people about you? What qualities does it have that are similar to yours?

Please complete the activities on pages 6 and 7.

Art

Find a spot in your garden or positioned near a window. Using your hands as a viewfinder, decide on what you would like to focus on and draw. It might be a tree, a flower, a house or building, an insect or animal, absolutely anything that interests you! You may want to just use pencil or you could use coloured pencils, pens or paints. You may want to focus on something further away so there are lots of things in your picture or you may want focus on something much closer and include lots of detail.
