PE

Aims and ambitions

At Old Basford School, we want our children to be physically literate, having the motivation, confidence, competence and knowledge to enjoy PE. All children will develop a strong sense of achievement and a strong sense of belonging. We educate our children to have a coherent knowledge and understanding of a variety of physical activities and understand the importance of leading a healthy and active life. Using a clearly planned out curriculum, our children are equipped with a variety of skills and competency to excel in a broad range of physical activities. Each child has the opportunity to join an after school club and represent the school at some point during their time at OBS. We believe that PE helps to develop the whole child, for example, PE promotes resilience, cooperation, communication, integrity and positive mental wellbeing. Our school motto of Opportunities Bring Success, empowers our children to be ambitious and be the best they can be.

Sequence and Progression

In EYFS, we teach PE through the Early Learning Goal of: Physical Development. In the outdoor learning environment, we encourage the children to develop their fine and gross motor skills and confidence through a wide range of physical equipment including small apparatus, wheeled toys and a trim trail.

We then follow the National Curriculum in Years 1 to Year 6. We have adapted the NC in to the Old Basford Curriculum Progression map. The units of learning are age appropriate and progressive from KS1 to KS2. The two main threads that bind the PE scheme together are: in KS1 balls skills moving to recognised ball sports in KS2 and movement skills (ie running, jumping, dance, balance and spatial awareness).

At the beginning of each lesson, key skills are revisited and built upon.

Children leave OBS ready and equipped to face the next stage in their physical education and beyond.
