Week Beginning 12.10.26
Year 2 have been SUPER busy this week, we have reviewed our growing cress experiment, compared seeds and bulbs and Miss Lawson took us all outside to plant some daffodil bulbs on Friday. We are hoping the cheer up the school grounds in Spring time. In our maths work we have been using equipment to help us add and subtract ones across tens. In our writing work, we have written our own stories based on Little Red Riding Hood and on Friday we were able to read this to the children in Year 1 - they gave us lots of 10/10 for our stories. Mrs Smythe and Miss Chauhan are super proud at how hard the children have worked on their stories this week, their pride in their work has been fantastic and it has really helped their confidence grow! Well done Year 2 - enjoy your two week rest. You deserve it!
We have had a wonderful week in Year 2 immersing ourselves in to our new text 'Little Red Riding Hood', children have taken part in lots of drama activities and we even held a trial to decide if the Wolf was a villain or just misunderstood – both classes decided he was indeed a villain. We also had our Year 2 maths parent workshop – there were over 30 parents that attended! Thank you all so much for your support. We looked at addition and strategies we can use to improve our speedy addition in Year 2 and to learn strategies to solve tricky missing number problems. All children have been sent home with a support pack (On Friday) to ensure that they have lots of resources to support any learning at home you can also see this handout below. You can see the link to the slides and some photographs from the workshop below:
This week we have been working on our O PROUD rule which is organised and tidy. We have done lots of work around keeping our workbooks, classroom and school environment tidy - we even did a litter pick and we were so shocked about how much litter we found! We have created some fantastic posters to put around areas of school and we have also been working hard at keeping the dinner hall tidy.
In our writing work we have been creating our very own warning poster about a creature that we have created. The year 2 teachers were super proud of the children – they published their work on to wonderful posters and they tried so hard to make sure they had used their best handwriting and that they had created work that they are proud of.
In maths this week, we have been looking at placing numbers on a number line and estimating where numbers would go on a blank number line. We have also been using the greater than, less than and equals symbols to compare objects and numbers.
This week we have been working really hard to understand the R PROUD rule which stands for Respect, we have read a story called The Respectful spot and we also made some fantastic respect rainbows which we have on display in our classrooms.
In our maths work this week we have been working on partitioning numbers to 100. We have looked at partitioning in to tens and ones - E.G 63 = 60 +3 or 60 + 3 = 63, we have also used base ten to flexibly partition numbers EG. 50 + 13 = 63 or 52 + 11 = 63. We have also worked on counting in 10's and placing numbers on a number line.
In our phonics work we have been revisiting the /ee/ family and have been reading words and spellings words with the /ee/ digraphs in them this week. In our writing, we have explored and written noun-phrases, had a go at writing some list sentences with a comma, and we have also created our own BIG BAD creature that we are going to use to create a warning poster in our writing lessons next week.
Miss Chauhan and Mrs Smythe have been really impressed with the start the children have made to Year 2. We have been working really hard on our school rules this week and our focus had been on P- Polite and Helpful. We have done lots of lovely drama lessons and the children have been putting in to practise their manners around school. We have also started working in our books this week and children have been impressing us with their presentation . In maths we have been learning all about tens and ones and place value, in writing we have started working on a warning poster unit and in phonics we have been looking at the /ai/ family. Well done Year 2.
The most important thing you can do with your child is listen to them read and find the time to share books together. Below you can find the video links to all of the sounds covered in the rocket phonics books up to orange level to support your children’s progress at home.
As a guide, your child should be on orange/turquoise books at the end of Autumn term to meet age related expectations and then on gold/white by the end of the summer term. Please also find a document with the common exception words below.

We learn lots of spelling rules through our phonics work each day in class and we also work hard to try and learn to read and spell the Year 2 common exception words. Both the Year 1 and Year 2 words are stuck in your child's diary so they can practise these at home. You could support their learning at home by ensuring they can read and spell the common exception words.

At Old Basford, we use our Key Instant Recall Facts (KIRFs) to ensure your child has speedy recall of essential maths facts. Your child should know them quickly as they will help them in all areas of maths. These again, are in your child’s diaries but you can also see them below. If your child is struggling, you could look at Year 1’s KIRFS to help build up their confidence. Please find the KIRFs for year 2 below.

Children also need to access their times tables rock stars accounts at home as part of their homework. We would love them to go on for 10 minutes at least 3x a week. Each child’s log in gives tailored questions to their ability so please make sure older siblings and parents are not accessing their account or the questions they are given will be too difficult for them.
In Year 2, our end goal is that Year 2 know their 10x, 5x and 2x multiplication and division facts instantly.
Your child can access TTRS through a website or you can download the free app to a device.
