Year 3

Year 3 Teachers

Class 7 – Mrs Baguley and Miss Booth

Class 8 – Miss Beard

Welcome to Year 3!

We are delighted to welcome our Year 3 pupils and families to the new school year. We look forward to an exciting year filled with learning, discovery, creativity, and fun.

Year 3 is an important step in each child's learning journey, and we are committed to providing a supportive and engaging environment where every child can thrive. We cannot wait to see all that our pupils will achieve this year.

We wish everyone a happy, successful, and enjoyable school year ahead!

Reading

Children will bring home a coloured book band reading book as well as a Reading for Pleasure book to enjoy with family members at home. We ask that children read at least three times each week and that an adult signs their reading diary. Reading diaries will be checked weekly.

Maths

TT Rock Stars is very important in Year 3 as it helps children develop quick recall of their times tables. Regular practice makes a huge difference, so we encourage children to spend at least 10 minutes each week using TT Rock Stars at home.

Spellings

Children will receive new spellings each week. Please support your child in practising these regularly so they can become confident and accurate spellers.

Week 7 WC 12.10.26

This week, in year 3 we have been finishing our writing about Stonehenge! We have also been spotting patterns in maths and thinking of ways to help us calculate our answers quicker. We have been using our number bonds again this week! For Black History Month, we took part in a creativity and diversity workshop online, with lots of other schools all over the country! We came up with a chant to sing, as well as some dance moves! We learnt about the meaning of the word 'apartheid.' We have continued to develop our rugby skills in P.E and we are all working hard and really trying to focus on our handwriting!

Week 6 WC 5.10.26

This week, our school value has been do your best! This week we focused on our final school value. We learnt a lot about growth mindset and embracing the power of the word 'yet.' The children learnt that simply using the word 'yet' at the end of a sentence can really change the way that your mind thinks about the way that you are able to achieve something. We discussed saying 'I can't do this yet' rather than using the phrase 'I can't do this.' We are really keen to build resilient learners at OBS and encourage the children to use this phrasing, in and out of school! Anything is possible if you put your mind to it, work hard and believe in yourself!

We have been continuing our learning of Stonehenge this week and reading information about this incredible monument in shared reading as well as science. In writing we have been learning about rhetorical questions and how to structure and improve our sentences! As well as this, we have had two successful parents evenings this week! Thank you to everyone who attended or got in contact to rearrange a meeting.

Week 5 WC 28.9.26

This week, our school value has been understanding others needs. We spent time discussing how we can help others who may need extra support. We spoke about different educational and physical needs and the challenges that others may face on a daily basis. Understanding others needs is about everyone being treated fairly but not treated exactly the same! Class 7 and 8 showed a lot of maturity when taking part in these discussions and the activities that went along with them!

In our dance lesson with Miss Tahlia, our movements and rhythm is really improving! It's been wonderful to see year 3 really express themselves in this class!

Week 4 WC 21.9.26

This week, our school value has been organised and tidy. We spent time designing a tidy and organised classroom and had discussions about how this could help us with our learning.

During maths this week we have been focusing on our number bonds to 10 and using our related facts to understand number bonds to 100! We played a variety of games, including number bonds shoot out! Have a look at our pictures to see what we have been doing!

Week 3 WC 14.9.26

This week, our school value has been respect. We spent time discussing what respectful and disrespectful behaviour looks like and took part in a sorting activity to help us recognise positive choices in different situations.

In PE, we continued developing our tag rugby skills. It has been fantastic to see the children growing in confidence, teamwork and sportsmanship as they learn new techniques and game strategies.

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us for OPAL Play on Wednesday. It was wonderful to see so many families enjoying the afternoon and sharing in the children's play experiences.

In the classroom, we have continued our learning about the Stone Age through both our writing and topic lessons. The children have been exploring what life was like during this fascinating period of history and using their knowledge to inspire their writing.

Well done, Year 3, for another hardworking and positive week! 🌟

Week 2 WC 7.9.26

This week, in year 3 we have been learning about the Stone Age. Children took part in an archeologist dig to find interesting artefacts about the Stone Age. The children have also been focusing on our Polite and Helpful PROUD rule this week, and it's clear to see that we have some very polite and helpful children in year 3 at Old Basford! We look forward to another wonderful week with our new year 3 cohort.
