Supporting your child at home

Reading

Y6 children will all have a colour banded reading book which is appropriate for their level as well as a reading for pleasure book.  Please support us by reading and discussing their books at home.  There is an additional sheet stuck in diaries explaining the goals and how to help your child. The whole school expectation is that children read at home either independently or to an adult at least THREE TIMES A WEEK and it is recorded in their diary (Book title, pages read, adult signature) Reading records are checked on Fridays.

Spellings

Each week the children will be given ten spellings, engaging in daily practice using a range of fun and helpful activities. You can support them to practice their weekly spellings as well as the common exception words that will be sent home to you electronically.

Practising their spellings little and often, making it fun is key to helping your children to become confident and successful spellers.

As a team, we can help the children to become super spellers.

Maths

Each child has a Times Table Rock Star account and login details are stuck in diaries.  This can be accessed from home so please encourage your child to have fun and practise their times tables. The whole school expectation is that children use TTRS at home at least THREE TIMES A WEEK.

Maths.com & SPAG.co.uk

In Year 6, we use these websites to set weekly homework. Your child will have a personal log in for each website stuck in the front of their diaries. These websites are excellent for giving children practise at answering SATS style questions. Homework will be set on a Friday and the children will have a week to complete it. Teachers will check that it has been completed the following Friday. To begin with, we will alternate the homework set (one week Maths, the next week SPAG) and we will build up to setting Maths and SPAG every week.

Optional topic homework

Each half term, to support our topic learning in school, we will be issuing topic homework which is of a creative nature. We will be sending home a sheet at the start of the topic with ideas for creative projects that the children can complete. We will give the children the whole half term to complete it and will have a showcase of projects in class where the children can show off their work! It is the expectation that all children complete a piece of topic homework for the half term.

Week 7: Week Beginning 12.10.26

On Tuesday this week, we held our first parent workshop of the year. We focused on arithmetic and showed parents the short and long methods for both multiplication and division that we use at school. We hope that this will help you to support your children further at home. A huge thank you to all the parents who came and supported our workshop.

Week 6: Week Beginning 05.10.26

During this week in Year 6, we have continued with our writing on scary stories and have practised skills that we will be using when we write our stories next week. In Maths, we continued with our work on the four operations. We revisited long multiplication and short division and also learnt how to do long division for the very first time! In our afternoon lessons, we focused on our PROUD rule of 'Do Your Best' and in geography, we learnt about the features of a river.

Week 5: Week Beginning 28.09.26

In Literacy, we have started a new unit of 'scary stories' and we watched the short animation 'Francis' as our inspiration for our work. The children were excellent at using 'show don't tell' to show how Francis' level of fear increases throughout the short film. In our indoor PE session, we continued with our circuit training to improve our fitness and stamina. We worked up a big sweat completing stations such as burgees, tricep dips, star jumps and lunges! In art, we started our Christmas card designs with Mrs Maker. It does seem too early to mention the 'C' word but we do need to get them made so they can be sent off to the printers in time! We are keeping our fingers crossed that lots of our lovely family members are kind and generous and purchase them as they help to raise much needed money for school!

Week 4: Week Beginning 21.09.26

Another busy week in Year 6 this week! We have written and published our Warning stories in writing, have been reading more of Kensuke's Kingdom in reading and have been learning about factors, multiples and negative numbers in Maths! In our afternoon lessons, we have focused on our PROUD rule of 'Organised and Tidy'.

Week 3: Week Beginning 14.09.26

Week 3 has seen the whole school focus on the 'RESPECT' aspect of our Proud Rules as part of our behaviour curriculum for this half-term. In Year 6, during one of our lessons, we shared the story 'The Only way is Badger' and we made respect flowers. Each petal had to state one way that we could show respect both at school and at home.

It has also been time for Year 6 to vote for this years' members of our school PLT - Pupil Leadership Team. The children who wanted to run for PLT wrote their own manifestos and delivered them to their classes in attempt to persuade their peers to vote for them! After careful counting of the votes, we would like to say congratulations to Isla and Finlay (Class 13) and Zainab and Olivia (Class 14) who were successful and will be part of PLT this year!

Our football sessions have continued on a Friday with Mr McGrory - come and see Class 14 in action!

Week 2: Week Beginning 07.09.26

Our first full week back in Year 6 and what a busy week it was! We continued with our baseline assessments and the staff were so impressed with the children's hard work and resilience that they demonstrated when doing these tests. Well done team!

Our shared text for this half term is Kensuke's Kingdom which we made a start on this week and the children fell in love with straight away. In writing, we continued learning about warning stories.

In our afternoon lessons, our focus was the 'Polite and Helpful' element of our PROUD rules and we thought carefully about different ways we can be polite and helpful both in and out of school. We had our first art session with the wonderful Mrs Maker and also our first football session with our expert coach - Mr McGrory.
