    Welcome to Year 1!

We are delighted to welcome our Year 1 children and families to the new school year. We look forward to a wonderful year filled with learning, exploration, creativity and fun.

Moving from Reception to Year 1 is a big step in every child's school journey. As children become more independent learners, they will build on the skills and confidence they developed in Reception while embracing exciting new challenges and opportunities.

We are committed to providing a caring, supportive and engaging environment where every child feels happy, valued and ready to succeed. We cannot wait to see all the progress and achievements our pupils will make throughout the year.

We wish all our children and families a happy, successful and enjoyable Year 1!

    Reading

Below is a list of the Year 1 Common Exception Words. Regular practice of these words at home will help children develop their reading and spelling skills.

    Mathematics

In addition to our mathematics curriculum, we will be developing children's fluency through the Year 1 KIRFs (Key Instant Recall Facts). Regular practice of these key facts will help children recall important mathematical knowledge quickly and accurately. Further details can be found in the document below.

    Weekly updates

Please find below an update on all the exciting learning that has taken place this week.

Thank you for attending our first workshop!

    We loved having you!

It was great to see so many of you attending our first parent workshop. Please see the information shared during the workshop below.

    Week commencing 12.10.26

Today we celebrated by wearing red to show we say full stop to racism! We looked at what it means to be unique and celebrated our differences and similarities. The children designed their own character, showcasing their likes and things that make them special. They then transferred these designs onto the laptops, check out some of their designs below.

    Full stop to racism!

    Check out our characters!

    Shape

In Maths, we explored common 2D and 3D shapes and learnt how to recognise their different properties. We made our learning hands-on by working in groups to sort a range of shapes into the correct categories. We enjoyed discussing our ideas and explaining how we knew where each shape belonged.

    Body parts investigation

In Science, we have been learning about the human body and its different parts. To bring our learning to life, some volunteers lay on large sheets of paper while their classmates drew around them. We thoroughly enjoyed labelling the body outlines and were impressed by how many body parts we could identify and name correctly.

    Materials Investigation

In Science, we explored a range of materials and their properties. We discussed why different objects are made from specific materials and how their properties make them suitable for particular uses. We then sorted a variety of everyday objects according to the materials they were made from and explained our reasoning, using our knowledge of material properties.

    Week commencing 5.10.26

    Computing - Keyboard skills
This week, we moved on to developing our keyboard skills by learning how to add text to our pictures. The children practised typing carefully and using the keyboard to create labels and captions.

    Do Your Best Olympics!

This afternoon, Year 1 held their very own Olympics, focusing on trying their best in a variety of events. The children showed great determination, resilience and enthusiasm as they took part in each challenge. We celebrated effort, perseverance and having a positive attitude, rather than simply winning.

    Week commencing 28.9.26

Understanding Others' Needs – Friendship Detectives
This afternoon, we continued exploring our theme of Understanding Others' Needs by becoming Friendship Detectives. We discussed different ways we can help others and what it means to be a kind and supportive friend. Through a range of scenarios, the children thought carefully about how they could recognise when someone needs help and how they can show kindness and care towards others.

Maths – Greater Than, Less Than and Equal To

In Maths this week, we have been learning about the symbols greater than (>), less than (<) and equal to (=). We started our learning journey by using dominoes to compare different amounts and decide which number was greater, smaller or the same. The children enjoyed carefully counting the dots and discussing their ideas with their partners. We then introduced the symbols and practised using them to compare numbers. The children showed great enthusiasm and are beginning to develop their understanding of how these symbols can help us compare and describe quantities. We look forward to building on this learning throughout the week with a range of practical and engaging activities.
