27th LAST DAY!
In reading, children will read a text per half term and answer questions using a variety of reading skills. This half term we are reading The Switch by Anthony Horowitz. In maths, we follow the White Rose maths scheme that teaches through a 'Mastery' approach. Please see the maths page for more information. This term, Year 5 will be learning about place value, adding, subtraction, multiplication, division and fractions. In writing, we teach in 3 week blocks teaching a variety of writing skills a child needs to be a successful Year 5 writer. In spelling, the children will learn a different spelling rule each week and also a list of 'Common Exception Words' - a list of 100 words Year 5 and 6 children are expected to learn that don't necessarily follow a spelling rule.
Please see the documents below.
Each half term, children will be sent home a homework sheet with a variety of things they can do which link to the topic we are learning. We also ask children to be heard read 3 times a week, practise times tables 3 times a week and practise spellings at home.
This week we started our new writing topic about a magical bean shop. We will be creating adverts using persuasive language over the next few weeks. In our topic lessons, we learnt about how we can understand the needs of others and the importance of equity - everyone getting what they need. We played basketball in PE and on Friday we made our annual charity Christmas cards with Miss Maker.
This week, we completed our writing about Goose Fair! We tried really hard with our work and used as many relative clauses as we could. We had our 2nd mini-police session about bullying which was really successful. On Thursday, we had our writing workshops to show how and what we write. In PE, we did basketball and tried really hard to shoot a hoop!
This week, we continued our learning of place value in maths and began to write up our information text of Goose Fair. In PE we practised our skills controlling a ball and in art we looked at pointillism (colouring using dots). We also looked at how we show respect for our school and others.
This has been our first full week of Year 5 and it went brilliantly! We had a mini goose fair in the classroom as part of our writing work, began to learn the value of digits up to 1,000,000 in maths and started our shared reading book The Switch. In the afternoons, we were learning about how we can be polite and helpful. Class 11 had a fantastic first swimming session and all of Year 5 had an amazing mini police session!
What a great first two days! We got to meet our new classmates, new teacher and support staff and found out what interesting things we will be learning in Year 5.
