Supporting your child at home

Reading

Y5 children will all have a colour banded reading book which is appropriate for their level as well as a reading for pleasure book. Please support us by reading and discussing their books at home. There is an additional sheet stuck in diaries explaining the goals and how to help your child.

Spellings

Each week the children will be given ten spellings, engaging in daily practice using a range of fun and helpful activities. You can support them to practice their weekly spellings as well as the common exception words that you will find stuck in their diaries.

Practising their spellings little and often, making it fun is key to helping your children to become confident and successful spellers.

As a team, we can help the children to become super spellers.

Maths

Each child has a Times Table Rock Star account and login details are stuck in diaries. This can be accessed from home so please encourage your child to have fun and practise their times tables. Inside diaries there is a copy of the times tables up to 12x and a 'key instant recall facts' (KIRFs). Each half term, a KIRF will be focussed on. Autumn 1's focus is multiplication and division facts to 12X.

Half Term Creative Homework Project

Every half term, we set a creative topic homework project linked to the current topic. It's always a favourite time of the term, when we share these in the last week before we break up. Please see flyer below, also stuck in diaries.

Spring Term Spellings

SPRING TERM 2

This half-term we will start our new topic called 'Be Empowered'. We will learn about renewable and non-renewable sources of energy and what their advantages and disadvantages are. We will also research inspirational people, including William Kamkwamba who built a windmill when he was 14 to help save his community who were suffering during a prolonged drought.

Outdoor P.E will be every Friday and Indoor P.E will be every Monday. We will start our Writing unit off by writing diary entries from the perspective of William Kamkwamba and in Shared Reading, we will begin looking at 'Women who made history'.

Week Beginning 9th March

Science – Air Resistance Investigation

In science this afternoon, we learnt about what air resistance is and explored how it affects moving objects. We discussed how air resistance is a type of friction that happens when air pushes against something as it moves. After that, we carried out our own investigation to see which factors can change the amount of air resistance. We tested different shapes and sizes of paper to see how quickly they fell and recorded our results to help us understand the forces involved.

World Book Day – Amigos

Year 5 celebrated World Book Day by sharing a story with our Amigos.

Art - Sketching and Shading

In art, we continued working on our bird sketches. We then used a variety of sketching pencils to add shading to our images, experimenting with techniques such as hatching, tonal shading and blending. These methods helped us create texture, depth, and more realistic shadows. The finished sketches are looking great!

Vector Drawings

In computing this afternoon, we continued to discover how to create vector drawings and learnt one of the most important and time-saving skills in life – how to copy, paste and undo!

CO Workshop

Today, Year 5 had a visit from the CO Crew Workshop. They took part in a variety of exciting activities, including games, drama, creating posters, and more. Get your children to tell you all about it and visit the website below:

Wow Day - Creating windmills

The children have done a fantastic job at working in teams to design and make their own windmills, we were so impressed!

Computing – Vector Drawings

In Computing this term, we are learning about vector drawings. Today, we began by exploring what they are and even had a go at creating one ourselves.

DT – Finishing our Trojan Horses

This afternoon, we finished our Trojan Horses by adding some paint and other finishing touches.

Internet Safety Day

For Internet Safety Day 2026, we learnt about what AI is and how to use it safely. As part of the lesson, we explored what to do in various online scenarios and finished by creating a poster.

DT Day – Making Trojan Horses

Year 5 had a fantastic DT day today, where they designed and created their own Trojan horses out of clay. We can’t wait to show them off at our showcase next week!

PE - Hockey

Today in PE, we continued to play hockey.

Computer work

We have enjoyed using the computers this week for our research on different areas of Ancient Greece as well as for practising our times tables. Keep up the hard work and remember to keep using TTRS at home.

Dragon hunt

We started off our new writing unit by getting outside and hunting for dragons!

We have been practising different balances, movements and twists and turns in our dance lessons this week.

Ancient Greek Artefacts

This afternoon, Year 5 became archaeologists as they examined a variety of artefacts from Ancient Greece and explored what these objects revealed about the ancient civilisation.

Composing Music

This afternoon, Year 5 started composing some spooky sounding music.

Week beginning 5th January

We have loved our WOW day to introduce our new topic of Ancient Greece. The children have designed and made their own Greek Pittas as well as persuasive posters to advertise them. We were so impressed with how many children were keen to try new ingredients. We have also used the Ipads to find the answer to our research questions and to learn more about the geography of Greece.

This afternoon, Year 5 finished off their masterpieces with Mrs Maker.

Creative Homework

This afternoon, we shared our topic homework. It was fantastic to see so much effort and creativity put into the projects.

Amigos

This afternoon, Year 5 visited their Amigos and had a great time!

Today we have enjoyed using 'Hot Seating' to help us generate ideas to use in our News Transcripts that we will be writing next week. Our work is based on our Shared Reading book 'The boy in the Tower' by Polly Ho - Yen.

Year 5 News Report

For the start of our new writing unit, we investigated some strange occurrences around school. It seems that piles of rubble have been discovered in various places. As a result, we have decided to create a news report to inform everyone and uncover the source of this mysterious phenomenon—before the school falls down!

Space art with Mrs Maker

This afternoon, Year 5 continued with their amazing space art and have nearly finished their masterpieces.

Jigsaw

Today in Jigsaw, we explored the topic of bullying and discussed ways to support a friend who might be experiencing it. We wrapped up the session by turning our ideas into a creative game of Snakes and Ladders.

Luna Cycle

This afternoon, Year 5 continued their science topic by learning about the Luna Cycle.

Amigos

This afternoon, Year 5 met their Amigos for the first time and had a great time getting to know them!

Computing

In computing, the children enjoyed exploring different camera techniques and deciding which would be most appropriate for different shots.

Week beginning 10th November

Children in Need

Year 5 ended the week by taking part in Children in Need. As well as having some tasty cakes and raising money, we got active by doing some exciting circuit training!

Fantastic Factors

In maths this week, we have been looking at multiplication. To help our understanding, we got some counters out to find out what square numbers are and why they are called 'square' numbers.

Art with Mrs Maker

This afternoon, Year 5 continued their amazing art with Mrs Maker. After drawing our planets, we used watercolours, brushes, and sponges to add lots of fantastic patterns and colours to our paintings. We can’t wait to carry on next week!

Week beginning 3rd November

To start off our new 'Life on Mars' topic, Year 5 had a very creative day. We started by creating some alien art by using our name and listening to the very famous Gustav Holst's 'The Planets'. We then designed and created our very own spacecraft.

Visit to Leo's Church

On Wednesday we visited St Leo's Church as part of last half-term's topic on Christianity. The children were brilliantly behaved, listened carefully and worked well in groups.

Week beginning 22nd September

Local History

This morning, Year 5 created our very own tour of the local area. As well as sketching historical buildings in Old Basford like Basford House and St. Leos church, we also went outside to find out facts about them.

Art in Religion

This afternoon, we looked at how Christianity is shown in a variety of artwork before creating our own design for a stained-glass window.

Search Engines

This afternoon in computing, we looked at what a search engine is and how they work. We then got the laptops out and had a go at using a variety of different search engines to compare them.

Week beginning 15th September

Sketch Maps

Today in geography, Year 5 looked at sketch maps. We then created our very own sketch maps of a fairground at our school. There were lots of very creative ideas!

Dreams and Goals

In Jigsaw this term, our topic is called 'Dreams and Goals'. In today's lesson we looked at jobs and careers along with why people may choose to do them. Included in this was an exciting game of charades based on different jobs.

History of the Goose Fair

As part of our local history topic, we learned about how the Goose Fair has changed over time by looking at a variety of historical sources, such as newspapers, videos, photographs and more.

Week beginning 1st September

We have had a super start to the new school year in Year 5. We have been thinking about the school rules, our aspirations for this year and how we can achieve more when we work together as a team. We have also had our first Wow day of the year. We looked at Arthur Spooner's painting, 'The Goose Fair, Nottingham' and have researched different rides at Goose Fair. We went onto design our own fairground ride, thinking about the artistic skills of using different tones, patterns and colours. A great first week in Year 5, well done to all of the children.
