Y5 children will all have a colour banded reading book which is appropriate for their level as well as a reading for pleasure book. Please support us by reading and discussing their books at home. There is an additional sheet stuck in diaries explaining the goals and how to help your child.
Each week the children will be given ten spellings, engaging in daily practice using a range of fun and helpful activities. You can support them to practice their weekly spellings as well as the common exception words that you will find stuck in their diaries.
Practising their spellings little and often, making it fun is key to helping your children to become confident and successful spellers.
As a team, we can help the children to become super spellers.
Each child has a Times Table Rock Star account and login details are stuck in diaries. This can be accessed from home so please encourage your child to have fun and practise their times tables. Inside diaries there is a copy of the times tables up to 12x and a 'key instant recall facts' (KIRFs). Each half term, a KIRF will be focussed on.
Every half term, we set a creative topic homework project linked to the current topic. It's always a favourite time of the term, when we share these in the last week before we break up. Please see flyer below, also stuck in diaries.
Welcome back to school Y5! We are very excited to begin the term and can't wait to start all the exciting things we have planned. Our topic is called Living Life and has a science focus. PE will be every Wednesday (outdoor) and Tuesday (indoor). We will also have weekly Computing, RE, Jigsaw, Spanish and music lessons. In writing, our unit will focus on the famous Shakespeare play Macbeth. Our shared reading text will be the M.G. Leonard book, ‘Beetle Boy’.
Each week, we will upload a brief synopsis and some photos and videos (scroll down)
Computing workshop
Year 5 were recently treated to an engaging and hands-on computing workshop focused on coding skills. During the session, pupils explored the basics of programming by using Crumble kits, which allowed them to build and control simple electronic circuits. The children showed great enthusiasm as they learned how to write and test their own code. This practical experience not only deepened their understanding of how technology works but also encouraged problem-solving, creativity and teamwork.
Music – Making Our Very Own Hip Hop!
This term, Year 5 are exploring music software to create their very own hip hop tracks. We got off to a fantastic start this afternoon!
WOW Day
For our WOW Day, we became botanists and scientists by dissecting a flower to investigate its structure and identify the different parts, including the petals, sepals, stamen and pistil. We used magnifying glasses to closely observe each part and discussed their functions in pollination and reproduction. After carefully examining the flower, we created detailed botanical drawings, using scientific observation skills to accurately record its features, shapes and textures.
Shakespeare Week
Year 5 launched Shakespeare Week with some exciting drama activities inspired by Macbeth. The children thoroughly enjoyed stepping into the roles and bringing moments from the play to life. In the afternoon, we explored our creative side by using paints to produce atmospheric artwork, capturing the mood and themes of the play.
Shakespeare Quiz
In computing, we used our coding skills to make a quiz based on Macbeth in Scratch.
Writing – Planning Our Text
This morning, we began our final unit by inventing a flying machine that we will later explain how to use in our writing. The wide variety of ideas clearly demonstrated the creativity of Year 5, with pupils designing imaginative and unique machines.
Computing - Creating an interactive quiz
This week, we continued developing our coding skills using Scratch, with a focus on creating an interactive quiz. Pupils explored how to design a sequence of questions and use different blocks, such as “ask” and “if/then” statements, to check answers and provide feedback. Learners demonstrated creativity by choosing their own themes and adding sound effects, animations and sprites to make their quizzes more engaging. By the end of the lesson, pupils had a working quiz that could interact with the user.
Balloon Landing
Year 5 have started our new writing topic off with an unusual occurrence! A hot hair balloon 'appears' to have landed on our school field! After spending some time considering what it was and what might have happened, the children spent some time completing activities using the parachute. When back in class, the children were introduced to their new model text: How to fly a hot air balloon. The children explored the key features of an 'explanation text', we were very impressed with the knowledge they had and we look forward to seeing the fantastic work they complete.
Insulation Investigation

WOW day
Year 5 have enjoyed a very creative day! As part of our new topic, we learned all about biomes and their features before putting our knowledge into practice by creating our own. In the afternoon, pupils used chalk and paper to create some amazing polar bear art.
Arctic Explorer Workshop
We began the new term in an exciting and memorable way with a visit from an Arctic explorer to launch our brand-new topic. The children were fascinated as they learnt all about the North and South Poles, discovering where they are in the world and what makes these regions so unique. They explored the lives of famous polar explorers, learned about the incredible animals that survive in such extreme conditions and found out what it is really like to travel and live in the polar regions.
The session was packed with interesting facts, stories from real expeditions and experiences that truly brought the topic to life. The braver children were even treated to a (very eye-opening!) look at what frostbite can be like. It was an inspiring and unforgettable start to our learning, and we would like to say a huge thank you to Simon the explorer for such an amazing and engaging day!
Science - Friction investigation
This afternoon, Year 5 planned and carried out an investigation into the friction caused by different surfaces.
Art – Finishing Our Drawings
This afternoon in art, we spent time completing our sketches by adding colour with watercolours. The children carefully applied different techniques—such as blending and creating light washes—to bring their drawings to life. It was lovely to see them experimenting with colour choices and showing real pride in their finished pieces.
The GREAT project
This week, Year 5 had their final session of the GREAT project, where they learnt all about healthy relationships.
Science – Air Resistance Investigation
In science this afternoon, we learnt about what air resistance is and explored how it affects moving objects. We discussed how air resistance is a type of friction that happens when air pushes against something as it moves. After that, we carried out our own investigation to see which factors can change the amount of air resistance. We tested different shapes and sizes of paper to see how quickly they fell and recorded our results to help us understand the forces involved.
Writing Workshop
Thank you to all those who came to the writing workshop this morning. Below are the slides for anyone who was not able to attend.
World Book Day – Amigos
Year 5 celebrated World Book Day by sharing a story with our Amigos.
Art - Sketching and Shading
In art, we continued working on our bird sketches. We then used a variety of sketching pencils to add shading to our images, experimenting with techniques such as hatching, tonal shading and blending. These methods helped us create texture, depth, and more realistic shadows. The finished sketches are looking great!
Vector Drawings
In computing this afternoon, we continued to discover how to create vector drawings and learnt one of the most important and time-saving skills in life – how to copy, paste and undo!
