We’re so excited to begin a new school year full of learning, laughter, and adventure. This year, we have lots of fun activities planned—from creative projects to new topics that will spark curiosity and imagination.
Each week, we’ll be uploading updates to this page so you can see the fantastic learning taking place in our classrooms. Be sure to check back regularly to celebrate all the brilliant work our Year 3 learners are doing!
We’re Here for You
We’re always here to support your children and you. If you ever have any worries, questions, or just want to chat, we’re available at the end of the school day. Please don’t hesitate to come and speak with us—we’re happy to help.
PE Days:
Just a reminder—our PE days are Tuesday and Wednesday. Please come to school in your PE kit on those days, ready to get active and have fun!

Each week, we would like you to aim to complete the following:
Spelling - practise the list given out on Mondays.
Reading - at least three times a week, signed in diaries
Times tables - regular practise on Times Tables Rockstars to prepare us for our maths lessons.
Creative homework based around our topics will be set later on each term once the children have been able to embed enough knowledge. Look out for this in our weekly posts.

Y3 children will all have a colour banded reading book which is appropriate for their level as well as a reading for pleasure book. Please support us by reading and discussing their books at home. There is an additional sheet stuck in diaries explaining the goals and how to help your child.
Each week the children will be given ten spellings, engaging in daily practice using a range of fun and helpful activities. You can support them to practice their weekly spellings as well as the common exception words that you will find stuck in their diaries.
Practising their spellings little and often, making it fun is key to helping your children to become confident and successful spellers.
As a team, we can help the children to become super spellers.
Each child has a Times Table Rock Star account and login details are stuck in diaries. This can be accessed from home so please encourage your child to have fun and practise their times tables. Inside diaries there is a copy of the times tables up to 12x and a 'key instant recall facts' (KIRFs). Each half term, a KIRF will be focussed on. Autumn 1's focus is number facts to 50.
If you were unable to make it to our Meet the Teacher session, please find the information in the slides below.
We’ve had a wonderful start to December! The children have been using all their senses to imagine what trolls might enjoy eating—fish, mushrooms, and even carrots were on the menu, and some brave taste testers gave them a try!
It was also lovely to see so many of you at our parent workshop. Thank you for joining us—we hope you found it enjoyable!
This week’s highlight was definitely the slime-making activity! We wanted to make the trolls feel more at home in our classroom, and what better way than with slime? Check out the pictures to see the fun in action!
We also continued working on our volcano art, experimenting with watercolours to bring our creations to life. Plus, we published our final stories—we can’t wait for you to read them!
Don’t forget: our Year 3 Parent Workshop is coming up next week on Thursday, 4th December. We’re excited to see you there!
We’ve had another fantastic week of learning! In our topic lessons, we explored earthquakes and discovered what tectonic plates are—why not ask your child to explain it to you? In art, we learned about Andy Warhol and his iconic pop art style, using this inspiration to create our own prints of Mount Vesuvius. PE was full of energy as we practised basketball skills and gymnastics. In computing, the children had a great time creating animations, which they absolutely loved!
Today was absolutely fantastic! The children had an amazing time creating their very own volcanoes using paper-mâché. After building and decorating them, we brought science to life with exciting eruptions. It was a wonderful hands-on experience that combined creativity with learning—and the children loved every moment!
What a Fantastic First Week Back!
It’s been wonderful to welcome the children back after the break — their energy and enthusiasm have filled the classroom! We’ve launched straight into our exciting new topic, Extreme Earth, starting with a deep dive into volcanoes. In English, the children have been unleashing their creativity by writing about trolls.
PE has been exciting, especially basketball sessions with Coach Hannah, where teamwork and skills are growing fast. In Computing, the children loved creating their own animations — they’ve even brought them home to share, and they’re simple enough to try again as part of home learning!
Here’s to a brilliant term ahead!
We are thrilled to begin Autumn Term 2 with our exciting new topic: Extreme Earth! This term, Year 3 will be exploring the dramatic forces of nature—from volcanoes and earthquakes to wild weather and natural disasters. We have lots of engaging activities planned to spark curiosity and deepen understanding. A quick reminder: our new PE days are Tuesday and Wednesday, so please ensure children come to school in their PE kits on those days. We can’t wait to welcome everyone back and hope you all had a lovely half-term break. We’ve missed you!
Our first topic in Year 3 is 'Stone Age to Iron Age'. We will be learning all about the changes in Britain between the early Stone Age (the Palaeolithic Era) and the Iron Age (just before the start of Roman Britain). We will explore the different settlements where humans lived (including Skara Brae), their diet and the development of farming as well as technological advances and the dawn of religion. Our English will focus around Stone Age themed stories such as Stone Age Boy and non-fiction writing about Stonehenge. To round it all off, we'll be creating our own Stone Age dwellings in DT towards the end of the term.
Our knowledge organiser below has more details of our topic.

This week, we stepped into the shoes of archaeologists and explored the past in exciting ways. In maths, we worked hard on understanding place value, showing great focus and determination. Our writing lessons were full of suspense—literally—as we began planning our very own suspense stories. We can’t wait to read the final pieces.
In topic, we journeyed through time, learning how people lived from the Stone Age to the Iron Age. We even discovered a new word: dwelling!
It’s been a busy and brilliant week. Have a lovely weekend, and we’re already looking forward to another action-packed week ahead!![]()
What an exciting WOW Day we had in Year 3! We became archaeologists for the day and had so much fun digging, discovering, and exploring just like real scientists.
This special day linked perfectly to our topic: Stone Age to Iron Age. We learned how archaeologists help us understand the past by carefully uncovering objects buried underground. Using brushes and tools, we searched for hidden artefacts.
We talked about how life changed from the Stone Age through to the Iron Age, and how each discovery tells us something new about how people lived, hunted, built homes, and made tools.
long a - 'ey'
Here are the spellings for this week along with the definitions and an image to accompany them so children can try to use them in context.

We’ve had a wonderful start to Year 3 and the children have really impressed us with their enthusiasm, kindness, and curiosity. It’s been such a joy getting to know each of them!
We’ve already jumped into our first topic—Stone Age to Iron Age—and had lots of fun creating a timeline to help us understand this fascinating period in history. The children showed great teamwork and interest as they explored how life changed over time.
We also enjoyed our first dance session with Miss Talia, which was full of energy and smiles. We’ve started reading Toby and the Ice Giants, and the children are already hooked! Plus, we had our very first Spanish lesson, where we began learning some basic greetings and phrases.
It’s been a busy and brilliant week, and we can’t wait to see what next week brings!
