Welcome to Year 3!

We’re so excited to begin a new school year full of learning, laughter, and adventure. This year, we have lots of fun activities planned—from creative projects to new topics that will spark curiosity and imagination.

Each week, we’ll be uploading updates to this page so you can see the fantastic learning taking place in our classrooms. Be sure to check back regularly to celebrate all the brilliant work our Year 3 learners are doing!

We’re Here for You
We’re always here to support your children and you. If you ever have any worries, questions, or just want to chat, we’re available at the end of the school day. Please don’t hesitate to come and speak with us—we’re happy to help.

PE Days:
Just a reminder—our PE days are Tuesday and Wednesday. Please come to school in your PE kit on those days, ready to get active and have fun!

Homework

Each week, we would like you to aim to complete the following:

Spelling - practise the list given out on Mondays.

Reading - at least three times a week, signed in diaries

Times tables - regular practise on Times Tables Rockstars to prepare us for our maths lessons.

Creative homework based around our topics will be set later on each term once the children have been able to embed enough knowledge. Look out for this in our weekly posts.

DATES FOR THE DIARY

Thursday 12th February- Parent Workshop. 9am.

Break up for half term- Friday 13th February

Reading

Y3 children will all have a colour-banded reading book which is appropriate for their level as well as a reading for pleasure book.  Please support us by reading and discussing their books at home.  There is an additional sheet stuck in diaries explaining the goals and how to help your child.

Spellings

Each week the children will be given ten spellings, engaging in daily practice using a range of fun and helpful activities. You can support them to practice their weekly spellings as well as the common exception words that you will find stuck in their diaries.

Practising their spellings little and often, making it fun is key to helping your children to become confident and successful spellers.

As a team, we can help the children to become super spellers.

Maths

Each child has a  Times Table Rock Star account and login details are stuck in diaries.  This can be accessed from home so please encourage your child to have fun and practise their times tables.  Inside diaries there is a copy of the times tables up to 12x and  a 'key instant recall facts' (KIRFs).  Each half term, a KIRF will be focussed on.  Autumn 1's focus is number facts to 50.

Meet the Teacher

If you were unable to make it to our Meet the Teacher session, please find the information in the slides below.

Week 4 WC 26.01.26

We’ve had  a wonderful week exploring light, shadows, and how they change! The children have been fascinated by watching how light travels and how objects can be transparent, translucent, or opaque. Through hands-on play and observation, they discovered how these different materials affect the shadows we see.

Using torches and natural light, the children experimented with making shadows bigger and smaller by moving objects closer to or farther from the light source. They also enjoyed looking closely at the patterns shadows make.

Week 3 WC 19.01.26

This week has been full of creativity, learning, and new skills!
In English, we’ve been busy finishing our characterisation stories inspired by Izzy Gizmo, using her inventive ideas to bring our own characters to life.

In PE, we continued developing our football skills, building confidence in dribbling, passing, and teamwork.

Our Spanish lessons took a fairy‑tale twist as we learnt new words and phrases linked to Little Red Riding Hood!

In PSHE, we spent time thinking deeply about our dreams and goals, exploring what we want to achieve and how we can get there.

A brilliant week of imagination, language, movement, and reflection!

Week 2 WC 12.01.26

This term in our Religious Education lessons, we have begun learning about Muslims and the key beliefs and practices within Islam. We have been very fortunate to have a range of authentic items brought into school, which has helped us deepen our understanding and explore the religion in a more meaningful and hands‑on way.

We’ve had another exciting week of learning! We started our new reading text, Ada Twist, Scientist, which has inspired lots of great conversations about what we might like to be when we’re older. The children have been full of brilliant ideas!

In PE, we began our football unit and quickly discovered we have some fantastic footballers in our class. Everyone showed great teamwork and enthusiasm.

The children also enjoyed using Scratch on the iPads—there were some very impressive creations, and it’s wonderful to see their confidence with coding growing.

As you can see from the photos, we’ve been busy with some dictionary work too, hunting for definitions of our key vocabulary words. The children worked really hard and showed fantastic focus.

A quick reminder:
Please make sure children are reading at home at least three times a week and spending at least 10 minutes a week on TT Rockstars to help keep their skills growing.

Well done, everyone, for another brilliant week!

Week 1 WC 05.01.26

We’ve had a fantastic start to the new year! The children shared their wonderful Christmas experiences and explored their creativity by making scribble bots. They showed great persistence and problem-solving skills, even when their bots didn’t work as planned. A brilliant way to kick off 2026 with innovation and resilience!

Week 7 WC 15.12.25

Some brilliant home learning!

We had a fantastic time celebrating! The party was filled with laughter, brilliant dance moves, and some very lucky winners. After the fun and games, everyone enjoyed delicious party food together in the classroom. To make the day even more special, the children headed home with some festive Christmas chocolates. It was a wonderful way to celebrate and spread holiday cheer!

Week 6 WC 08.12.25

It has been another wonderfully busy week in Year 3! We enjoyed a lovely time at church singing Christmas songs, which filled us all with festive cheer. In English, we used our knowledge of trolls to write an information text about ogres, showing off our growing skill with rhetorical questions. Finally, we have started to round up everything we’ve learnt about Extreme Earth to create our double-page spreads, which are already looking fabulous.

To top it all off, we are excitedly looking forward to the Year 3 party on Monday. Don't forget to come in party clothes!

Week 5 WC 01.12.25

We’ve had a wonderful start to December! The children have been using all their senses to imagine what trolls might enjoy eating—fish, mushrooms, and even carrots were on the menu, and some brave taste testers gave them a try!

It was also lovely to see so many of you at our parent workshop. Thank you for joining us—we hope you found it enjoyable!

Week4 WC 24.11.25

This week’s highlight was definitely the slime-making activity! We wanted to make the trolls feel more at home in our classroom, and what better way than with slime? Check out the pictures to see the fun in action!

We also continued working on our volcano art, experimenting with watercolours to bring our creations to life. Plus, we published our final stories—we can’t wait for you to read them!

Don’t forget: our Year 3 Parent Workshop is coming up next week on Thursday, 4th December. We’re excited to see you there!

Week 3 WC 17.11.25

We’ve had another fantastic week of learning! In our topic lessons, we explored earthquakes and discovered what tectonic plates are—why not ask your child to explain it to you? In art, we learned about Andy Warhol and his iconic pop art style, using this inspiration to create our own prints of Mount Vesuvius. PE was full of energy as we practised basketball skills and gymnastics. In computing, the children had a great time creating animations, which they absolutely loved!

WEEK 1 WC 03.11.25

What a Fantastic First Week Back!

It’s been wonderful to welcome the children back after the break — their energy and enthusiasm have filled the classroom! We’ve launched straight into our exciting new topic, Extreme Earth, starting with a deep dive into volcanoes. In English, the children have been unleashing their creativity by writing about trolls.

PE has been exciting, especially basketball sessions with Coach Hannah, where teamwork and skills are growing fast. In Computing, the children loved creating their own animations — they’ve even brought them home to share, and they’re simple enough to try again as part of home learning!

Here’s to a brilliant term ahead!

Autumn Term 2

We are thrilled to begin Autumn Term 2 with our exciting new topic: Extreme Earth! This term, Year 3 will be exploring the dramatic forces of nature—from volcanoes and earthquakes to wild weather and natural disasters. We have lots of engaging activities planned to spark curiosity and deepen understanding. A quick reminder: our new PE days are Tuesday and Wednesday, so please ensure children come to school in their PE kits on those days. We can’t wait to welcome everyone back and hope you all had a lovely half-term break. We’ve missed you!

Autumn Term 2025

Our first topic in Year 3 is 'Stone Age to Iron Age'. We will be learning all about the changes in Britain between the early Stone Age (the Palaeolithic Era) and the Iron Age (just before the start of Roman Britain). We will explore the different settlements where humans lived (including Skara Brae), their diet and the development of farming as well as technological advances and the dawn of religion. Our English will focus around Stone Age themed stories such as Stone Age Boy and non-fiction writing about Stonehenge. To round it all off, we'll be creating our own Stone Age dwellings in DT towards the end of the term.

Our knowledge organiser below has more details of our topic.

WEEK 4 SPELLINGS

Here are this week's spellings for Year 3 based around the 'ai' diagraph along with an image and their definitions so children can try to use them in their writing.

WC 15.08.2025

This week, we stepped into the shoes of archaeologists and explored the past in exciting ways. In maths, we worked hard on understanding place value, showing great focus and determination. Our writing lessons were full of suspense—literally—as we began planning our very own suspense stories. We can’t wait to read the final pieces.

In topic, we journeyed through time, learning how people lived from the Stone Age to the Iron Age. We even discovered a new word: dwelling!

It’s been a busy and brilliant week. Have a lovely weekend, and we’re already looking forward to another action-packed week ahead!laugh

WOW DAY! 15.09.25

What an exciting WOW Day we had in Year 3! We became archaeologists for the day and had so much fun digging, discovering, and exploring just like real scientists.

This special day linked perfectly to our topic: Stone Age to Iron Age. We learned how archaeologists help us understand the past by carefully uncovering objects buried underground. Using brushes and tools, we searched for hidden artefacts.

We talked about how life changed from the Stone Age through to the Iron Age, and how each discovery tells us something new about how people lived, hunted, built homes, and made tools.

We’ve already jumped into our first topic—Stone Age to Iron Age—and had lots of fun creating a timeline to help us understand this fascinating period in history. The children showed great teamwork and interest as they explored how life changed over time.

We also enjoyed our first dance session with Miss Talia, which was full of energy and smiles.  We’ve started reading Toby and the Ice Giants, and the children are already hooked! Plus, we had our very first Spanish lesson, where we began learning some basic greetings and phrases.

It’s been a busy and brilliant week, and we can’t wait to see what next week brings!
