Spring 1- A Toy Story

Welcome back to school after the holidays. We wish you all a Happy New Year! This half-term our topic is called A Toy Story, it is a history-based topic where we will look at toys in the present and the past. We will compare the materials toys are made from now and then and discuss why we think that. We are learning to programme Bee-bots in computing, engage in gymnastics and football in P.E and even make some toy parts during design and technology.  We can't wait for the next chapter of our learning.

This week we thoroughly enjoyed our wow day! We played some old-fashioned favourite games, including hopscotch, What's the Time Mr Wolf, dobby scarecrow, an egg and spoon race and even played with the hoopla hoops. The children shared their favourite teddy and then did an observational drawing of them. We were given a basket of lost toys, which we had to investigate and guess what they did and who they might belong to. See some pictures of the day below.

We even made some season scenes. You will be able to see them when we do our showcase later this term! Other things we have been learning about are writing simple sentences in literacy, finding out about what Christians believe about Christmas and who Jesus is.

Immersion in night experiences

We had a brilliant week exploring the night. We are trying to find out about the night and how spectacular it can be so we can convince Plop the dark is super! We have engaged in a range of activities including making firework pictures, star gazing, singing songs and drinking hot chocolate around the classroom camp fire. We even found out who Guy Fawks is and why he is so famous.

Children in need day fun included eating cakes, taking on sporting challenges and enjoying spending time with our friends! Take a look at the pictures below!

Visit from Owls!

We had a fantastic visit from Owl Adventures, who brought four birds in for the children to see. The children met Henrietta (the eagle owl), Crunchie (the barn owl), Gizmo (the little owl) and Maverick. Year 1 learnt lots of new information and were totally immersed in the experience; even getting to see them fly and hold them.

Autumn 1- Super Me!

Welcome to our first topic in year 1. We will fly into the world of super children and find out what their super powers are, we can't wait to see what makes them unique! Take a look each week to see what experiences we take part in...

Week 3- All settled and having fun!

This week we have enjoyed singing new songs, telling Jack how wonderful he is and how he helps us. We love learning about how to get along and show kindness to each other. But the highlight of our week was finding out about worms and making our very own class worm world. We can't wait to show you over the coming weeks what they do!

Ask your children what facts they have already found out about worms (pictures coming soon).

Week 1- Getting to know each other

This week we have explored different books, had fun talking about what we want to be and even inventing our own worlds and classrooms! Take a look and see...

Maths

In year 1 we really embed the basics to become confident in all areas of maths. We are beginning to use Key Instant Recall Facts (KIRFs) to ensure your child has speedy recall of essential maths facts. Your child should know them quickly as they will help them in all areas of maths. Please find the KIRFs for year 1 below with some helpful hints. In the Autumn term we are focussing on knowing our numbers to 10, their value and how to write them in numerals and words.
