  • SHOW RACISM THE RED CARD OBS MINI MARATHON

    Fri 18 Oct 2019
Many of our children, following the England VS Bulgaria football match on Monday night and the appalling scenes from racist members of the crowd, were discussing on the playground before school and at breaktime how awful and upsetting it was to watch.

I invited our new OBS 2019-2020 Sports Captains for school to meet with me during afternoon assembly that day. Led by them and their thoughts and ideas, the captains and I put together a plan of action to show, how as a school, we celebrate equality and diversity and that we wanted to use the match as a platform to demonstrate this.

That afternoon, the Sports Captains created and made over 500 Red Cards for all pupils and staff to wear on Friday (today) during our Annual OBS Mini Marathon event. The OBS Sports Captains also asked if pupils could come to school wearing their PE Kit and 1 item of RED clothing to support the SHOW RACISM THE RED CARD campaign!

As well as creating the 500+ red cards, the OBS Sports Captains created a flyer that they handed out to parents at the end of the school day. They also held many mature conversations with the adults, who were coming to collect their children, as to why they had come up with this idea!

This morning (Friday) we have held our Annual Mini Marathon, all 480 children and all members of staff have run our OBS Mini Marathon course whilst each wearing their SHOW RACISM THE RED CARD labels and an item of red clothing.

NEEDLESS TO SAY … I AM A VERY PROUD HEADTEACHER THIS MORNING.
  • DIWALI ASSEMBLY LEAD BY OUR PUPILS

    Thu 17 Oct 2019
I am so PROUD of some of our older Sikh and Hindu boys who yesterday lead an informative assembly to the rest of the school about Diwali! When Mrs Whitehead told me they had each prepared their speeches at home and then practised together at playtime I just smile with pride!
  • SCHOOL SPORTS CAPTAINS LEAD THE WAY IN SHOWING RACISM THE RED CARD!

    Wed 16 Oct 2019

Following on from the appalling scenes this week on the TV during the England vs Bulgaria football match; our older pupils have been discussing these events very maturely with members of staff.

Today Mrs Shaw was joined by some of the OBS Sports Captains and listened to their thoughts about combining Friday's postponed Mini Marathon and  the Show Racism the Red Card campaign.

It was agreed that all pupils would wear a Red Card whilst taking part in the Mini Marathon on Friday to demonstrate that as a school and that in any sporting activity we here at OBS continue to value equality and diversity!

5 of the OBS Sports Captains tonight handed out flyers to parents as they came to collect their children on the school path before the end of school explaining their proactive decision. PROUD!

  • YEAR 5 VISIT CLOVER GREEN RESIDENTIAL HOME

    Wed 16 Oct 2019

We here at OBS we continue to be incredibly PROUD of our strong relationship with Clover Green Residential Home for the Elderly.

Yesterday our Y5 children spent some of the morning with the Clover Green elderly residents discussing Nottingham now and in the past, which is linked to their historical topic of Nottingham's Goose Fair!

We received the following message of thanks and appreciation from the Manager of Clover Green:

    Thank you Old Basford School

Our elderly residents  really really enjoyed their time with our y5 pupil so much they want to come  in to the school to see them again very soon. We were hoping to attend your pantomine and I will be in touch shortly to arrange that.

The visit  really helped in boosting their confidence and definitely improved their mood as some of them can get a bit fed up, but they seemed like different people when they were around your pupils this morning and were far more positive in themselves.

So thank you so much for coming and for all of your help . I know it all takes time for you to organise and if you have any more ideas about working together let me know.

  • BLACK HISTORY HEROES OPTIONAL HOLIDAY HOMEWORK

    Mon 14 Oct 2019

Today in assembly Mr Ross launched our exciting October half Term Optional Homework Project to the school! This year we have decided to combine the key qualities within our Fundamental British Values and Black History Month!

    Please see details below!

    BLACK HISTORY MONTH

    “MY HERO

Your optional half term holiday homework is to produce a mini-project based on a black hero. This year we will again acknowledge, celebrate and say thank you to our ‘unsung’ heroes.

This could be about your mum, dad, gran, neighbour, your dance teacher, your football coach, the local police officer, the postie, your favourite shopkeeper; anyone you think deserves a special mention. If you are unable to think of someone who is not famous, of course we are happy to receive homework about any famous black person from the past and from the present. It would be wonderful if you could link your hero to any or all of the Fundamental British Values:

    • Individual Liberty
    • Tolerance
    • Mutual Respect
    • Democracy
    • Responsibility

Your project can be as creative as you like. In fact, the more creative the better. You can draw a poster, write a fact file, make a 3D picture, painting, drawing, collage, do some research. It’s up to you! Your projects can also be created as a family or a group of friends if you wish.

You can start your project immediately or at any point over the holiday. It must be handed in by the morning of Friday 8th November as we hope to showcase the wonderful range of projects we get back in the hall after school that day – all will be welcome! Have Fun!

  • Y6 TAG RUGBY TEAM ARE UNDEFEATED AT CITY FESTIVAL

    Mon 14 Oct 2019
What an incredible start to the Tag Rugby Season! This afternoon our Y6 Tag Rugby team (consisting of 7 boys and 5 girls) competed in the City Rugby Festival at Moderns RFC in Wilford! The team all scored at least 2 tries each and were unbeaten in each of their 6 matches! Miss Fleet was delighted with both their attacking and defensive play, but most importantly superbly PROUD and impressed of their team spirit, respect for their fellow peers and fellow competitors from other schools. (We now can't wait for the Y5 Rugby competition in November!)
  • HIBERNATION TIME FOR TILLY THE TORTOISE!

Mon 14 Oct 2019 Mrs Schindler

It is that time of year again, where we say 'night-night' to Tilly the tortoise as she gets ready for her big sleep. Tilly will be in school this week but will then be hibernating until the temperatures start to warm up again in the new year. She usually comes back to school after February half term, having had 4 months of rest, but I will be sure to let you know when she wakes up in 2020! Fingers crossed for a safe sleep and no trying to escape.
