  • BLACK HISTORY MONTH 2023 UPDATE

Fri 27 Oct 2023 JAYNE THOMAS

What a way to end OBS's Black History Month! It was so lovely to see everyone wearing red for a change. It was such a joint powerful message that our school are united in our determination to 'Show Racism the Red Card'.

During October, our assemblies had a focus of celebrating current and historical achievements of prominent Black people. We learned songs by John Legend, Jimmy Cliff, Bob Marley and Stevie Wonder was our focus musician of the month. We learned about Paul Stephenson and the Bristol Bus Boycott, Rosa Parks, Nelson Mandela, Lewis Lattimer, the inventor of the light bulb, poems by Benjamin Zephaniah and the amazing Simone Biles, to name but a few. Willard Wigan, the famous miniaturist sculptor, presented a whole school assembly and then worked with two year groups throughout the day. What an inspirational Black artist he is and how he motivated us all to create miniature art and look at his current exhibition at Wollaton Hall.

Today we talked about why 'Show Racism the Red Card' is so important and why the Newcastle United goalkeeper, Shaka Hislop', who had been a victim of racism, had decided to shine a light on racist behaviour and do all he could as a famous figure to stamp it out. We had discussions, watched videos and created posters and artwork about how we must not tolerate any racist behaviour and stand up to anyone using any racist language. Some of these posters are now displayed around school as a permanent and prominent reminder to us all why this is such an important issue for us all.

  • Boys Multi-Sports Festival

Thu 19 Oct 2023 Miss Marrow

Today 8 of our year 6 boys attended the multi-sports festival at Harvey Hadden Sports Village. This was a fantastic opportunity for the boys to try a range of sports that they may not normally have the opportunity to experience. It's a great chance for children to foster a positive attitude towards sports through accessing the full range of sports that are out there to try.

  • Mini Basketball Tournament

Tue 17 Oct 2023 Miss Marrow

Afterschool today, 10 lovely year 6s went to Burford Primary School to partake in a mini basketball tournament. The children were split into two mixed teams of 5 and each team took it in turns to play Burford Primary School and Gotham Primary School.

The children were fantastic at working together, finding space and showing their sportsmanship. This was the first basketball competition of the year and the first time these players had worked together. Despite it being their first time, they supported each other with the more experienced basketball players supporting the new members. The 'OBS Way' was definitely clear for all to see and I was proud to take such well behaved, well mannered and determined athletes to the tournament. Although scores were not tracked, OBS won most of the games that they were a part of and scored many many points- great job!

I am excited to see how they get on in the formal basketball league.

  • Recognition Time - 13.10.23

    Fri 13 Oct 2023

It is always a pleasure to spend time with those children who have gone 'above and beyond' this week in their learning and their attitude to school.

We talked about what they enjoyed at school:

    -PE

    -Computing

    -Maths

    -Trips

    -Playtimes

When I asked about about what they were looking forward to this year, the majority spoke about residentials.  The Year 2's were very excited about being able to camp over at school for the first time!

  • Year 4/5/6 Football Tournament

Mon 09 Oct 2023 Miss Marrow

Today, 7 super talented footballers attended Nottingham Forest's festival of football tournament. The boys were put in group 4 of 4, each group containing 5 different local school football teams. 5 games of 8 minutes were played...

Game 1- Old Basford WIN. 1-0 Jacob on the score sheet.

Game 2- Old Basford WIN. 1-0 Tyrell on the score sheet.

Game 3- Old Basford draw 1-1

Game 4- Old Basford draw 0-0.

Game 5- Old Basford WIN 1-0. Asaiah on the score sheet.

The boys came a MAGNIFICENT 2nd in their group, not losing a single game and only conceding ONCE in the whole competition. There were also displays of lovely captaincy from Asaiah and Blake, particularly when an opposing team refused to shake hands with our players following a defeat. OBS showcased themselves as great sports players, even though they didn't qualify for the semi-finals. They celebrated each others successes and have the drive and ambition to learn from the tournament and have a great upcoming football season.

  • Artist Visit (Willard Wigan)

Fri 06 Oct 2023 Mrs Maker

We have had some special visitors in today.

DR Willard Wigan MBE creator of the world's smallest handmade sculptures. Guinness world Record holder for the smallest hand sculptor. And not forgetting, the very lovely and talented model makers John and Kelly.

We enjoyed a whole school assembly, we asked lots of questions and marvelled at Willard's incredible work.

Willard worked with two year groups, year 5 and year 2, inspiring them to design their own small environments and demonstrating his tin foil skills! He even made me out of foil!

Following on from this we will be working on creating a room to go on display at Wollaton Hall in a new exhibition called 'Disappearing world'.

We are very lucky to have had this opportunity.

You see more of his work on display at Wollaton Hall in an exhibition called 'Miniature Masterpieces'. its completely free.

Last weekend, Alayah Hudson (Year 1) attended the British National Taekwondo Championships in Sheffield. Alayah spent the weekend competing in different heats. After a tiring weekend she was eventually  crowned 3rd PLACE British National Champion! This is an incredible achievement and everyone at Old Basford School are very proud of her. We are lucky to have such a fantastic sporting role model at school and look forward to seeing what else she achieves in Taekwondo. Well done Alayah!
